Comprehensive Project Documentation - Activities, Achievements and Outcomes from the First Fire CCI Project Year

What type of information is needed by the scientific and research climate, atmospheric and ecosystem modeller communities in relation to burned areas? Identifying and analysing those communities needs was one of the first major task that has been conducted during the first year of the Fire CCI project. The results are described in the User Requirements Document, including the user questionnaire and a substantial review of scientific literature leading to a comprehensible synopsis and analysis of existing burned area products. Based on the user demands and observing the GCOS requirements, the Product Specifications Document has been derived, defining and describing two Global Burned Area Products to be finally delivered. All input, reference and auxiliary data that will be processed, used and applied and finally ingested into the production environment is comprehensively described and clearly listed in the Data Access Requirements Document. The methods and approaches of the independent processing stages - satellite data pre-processing, sensor specific burned area detection and burned area merging - are discussed and described in a first light version, each accessible in a seperated Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document - ATBD I (Pre-processing), ATBD II (BA detection) and ATBD III (Merging). In order to ensure that the intermediate products are in line with the specifications defined and that the final BA product meets the user requirements, comprehensive and thorough verification and validation procedures have to be performed. The way the validation procedures will be conducted are described and exemplified in the Product Validation Plan. One major concern of the project is to provide a consistent and reliable Global Burned Area Product that is traceable and replictable. This implies the identification and description of error sources and their impact on the reliability of the final product. A first version of the Comprehensive Error Characterisation Report will be soon availabe. The System Requirements Document has been elaborated simultaneously in order to address the technical and system specific end-to-end production needs.

Dedicated documents has passed independent review and assessment from international Key Science Bodies, amongst them the Global Carbon Project, CEOS LPV, GOFC-GOLD Fire IT. In compliance with ESA CCI policies, in order to ensure transparency and accessibility, all documents are available for public. All interested science and research communities involved in fire disturbance related programmes are encouraged to download the document collection for independent assessment and validation.

The achievements and outcomes of the first Fire CCI project year will be presented at the Round-Robin workshop to be held in Stresa, Italy, on 17 - 18 October 2011. More information is made available on During the workshop, the first Round-Robin exercise will be performed, demonstrating and guiding inter-face accessibility for external uses, in order to participate on the burned area inter-comparison and selection stage.
