Successful Kick-Off of Fire_cci Phase 2

The Kick-Off meeting for Phase 2 of Fire_cci was held at the University of Alcala, Spain, on 7-8 September 2015, with the attendance of representatives of the Fire_cci project team and the ESA Technical Officer. This new phase of the project will last for a period of 36 months, and will continue and improve the work done in Phase 1.

The new consortium for Phase 2 is organized as follows:

Fire_cci Global Burned Area products available

The final version of the Burned Area (BA) products has been released. The products include BA pixels at full MERIS resolution with date of detection, confidence level and land cover burned in GeoTIFF format. The BA in the Grid products is computed for 0.5 degree resoltution every 15 days, and inlcude total BA, standard errror, fraction of observed area, number of burned patches and sum of BA for each land cover type.
The products include the period from 2006 - 2008 and are available at .

The Round-Robin Exercise is officially closed.

After an extension until 10 February 2012, the Round-Robin exercise is officially closed. Currently, the validation team performs the assessment and validation of all data sets envolved. A comprehensive description of the relevant procedures and processes will be documented in the Validation and Selection Report. Preliminary results will be presented at the 5th Project Progress Meeting on 24 April 2012 in Vienna, held during the EGU General Assembly 2012.

The Round-Robin Exercise of the Fire CCI Project has now officially begun

The Round-Robin exercise of the fire_cci project has officially kicked off on 1st November 2011 and will last three months. The objective of the Round-Robin (R-R) Exercise is to compare the burned area (BA) products using different external algorithms and identifying the one showing the best performance (internal and external). To evaluate the performance of as many BA algorithms as possible the exercise will be oriented to facilitate and encourage the participation of as many external researchers and institutions as possible.

Introducing the Round-Robin Exercise to International Fire Research Communities

The introduction of the Fire CCI Round-Robin Exercise was given on 17 - 18 October 2011 in Stresa, Italy, in combination with the GOFC-GOLD Fire IT Meeting and followed by the 8th EARSeL Forest Fire Special Interest Group. The Fire CCI Round-Robin Workshop aimed at presenting the current ESA CCI Fire Disturbance project status and promoting the participation of external and independent fire experts on the inter-comparison of Burned Area detection algorithms.
